NCDA Takes on Tobacco Study

Jamaica is the only Caribbean country to conduct the Global Health Professional Students Survey (GHPSS). The NCDA is conducting the study with the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Centres for Diseases Control (CDC). The World Health Organization (WHO), PAHO,CDC and the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) developed the study.

The Jamaican GHPSS will be conducted among 493 medical, nursing and pharmacy students in 7 institutions across the island. The NCDA is partnering with Dr. Winston De La Haye of the University of the West Indies.

Health professionals are important gatekeepers of information and care for tobacco related diseases. It is important to gauge their knowledge, attitudes, consumption patterns and need for treatment. This survey of health professionals in training provides useful information for health planners and policymakers.
