The Optimist Clubs of Caymanas, North Portmore, Kensington, Spanish Town, North St. Catherine, Eltham and Braeton are working on a joint drug prevention initiative with the National Council on Drug Abuse (NCDA). Under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor, Janet Hy lton, the clubs will implement the NCDA’s Resistance Education Against Drugs (READ) programme in the Portmore and Spanish town areas. The initiative aims to raise consciousness in the environs about the consequences of drug abuse and the sale of drugs to minors. Seventy first formers selected from various schools in that region are to be trained by the NCDA to execute such community based programmes during their time in high school. The group held discussionson Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Eltham High School.
